Piazza del Gesù Nuovo

It is one of the most important, famous and symbolic squares of the historic center of Naples.

The square, which owes its name to the church of the same name, is located on the lower decumano and its central position with respect to the historic city center places it a few steps away from other important historical sites, such as via Toledo and piazza Dante, piazza Monteoliveto. piazza San Domenico Maggiore.

Given its architectural and structural complexity, the square is not accessible by any means of locomotion, either public or private, and constitutes an entirely pedestrian area. The square, the fulcrum of some of the most important monuments of Naples, revolves around the monumental obelisk of the Immaculate, majestic spire of white marble and bardiglio placed in the middle of the esplanade.

On the west side, there are some historic noble palaces of late baroque style, such as the Pandola palace and the Pignatelli di Monteleone palace. On the opposite side of them, on the other side of the road, there is an important complex of medieval architecture, the Clarisse church.

Opposite and to the side respectively rise two of the most important churches in the city: the church of Gesù Nuovo and the Monastery of Santa Chiara. The first, built on what was the Sanseverino palace, has in its fifteenth-century façade with diamond-studded ashlar-stone in the most typical example of Neapolitan baroque. The second, which instead represents the largest Gothic style church in the city, has the official burial place of the Bourbons, where the sovereigns of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies rest, from Ferdinand to Francis II.

On the sides of the church of the Gesù Nuovo, there are two other monumental buildings, now become high schools, the Congregations building, which became “Genovesi” high school and the Professa palace, today “Eleonora Pimentel Fonseca” high school.
